Three recovery tips after root canal treatment

You might need a root canal treatment for a variety of reasons. Tooth decay and nerve damage are two of the more common ailments that we see. The dental professionals at our practice are always ready to provide every member of your family with the dental treatment they need.

The root canal treatment we provide at our Whangarei practice is specifically designed to help you keep your original teeth. This treatment helps you avoid an extraction that can cause the alignment of your other natural teeth to shift. Even though a root canal procedure will remove the roots of the infected tooth, you won’t lose any of the functionality. In fact, the treated tooth will have a dental crown placed over it to make it stronger and more durable.

The post-operative phase is important. Here are a few boxes you can check to make sure that it goes smoothly:

Watch what you eat

While that’s good advice for anyone looking to maintain their dental health, it’s especially important after a root canal treatment. You’ll need to eat soft foods for a few days after your treatment. Staying away from chewy and hard foods for just a short while is advised.

The tooth that you’ve had the work done on might be susceptible to hot and cold sensitivity for several days afterwards. If you can, try to only drink liquids that are room temperature.

Keep the treatment area clean

It’s also a good idea to avoid brushing and flossing the treatment area for a couple of days.  Depending on the situation, we might advise you to just rinse with warm water for a short time after your procedure. That way you’ll be able to keep the treatment site as clean as possible while it has a chance to heal. It’s also important to make sure that you take the antibiotics as directed if we have prescribed them for you.

We’re always available to answer all of your questions about root canal treatment.
