Peter’s story
EARLY LIFE AND CAREER
Peter was born and raised in Apia, Samoa, in a close-knit family that valued education, service, and hard work. He moved to Dunedin in 2011 to pursue his dream of becoming a dentist, completing his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Otago in 2015. His early years were spent in public hospitals in Samoa and Invercargill, where he developed a strong passion for oral surgery and rural patient care.
Determined to improve access to surgical treatment in regional communities, Peter completed a Master of Dentistry in Rural Oral Health before going on to specialise. He recently finished his Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Surgery) through the University of Otago and Dunedin Public Hospital – the culmination of nearly a decade of intensive training.
Joining Kowhai Dental
Peter now brings his specialist expertise in oral surgery to Kowhai Dental as a visiting provider. He is highly trained in wisdom tooth removal, dental implants, bone grafting, and oral pathology – and is currently the only oral surgeon in Northland providing on-site care that qualifies for ACC and Southern Cross funding.
Known for his calm and empathetic approach, Peter focuses on reducing patient anxiety and making even the most complex procedures feel manageable and comfortable.
Life outside work
Peter lives in Auckland with his wife, son, and their dog Maui. He keeps active at the gym, enjoys long walks, and has recently taken up golf – a hobby he’s growing quietly obsessed with.
