recovery tips

1. Don’t eat right away

This procedure usually requires that we use some kind of anesthetic. That means your mouth will be a little numb for a while afterwards. That’s why we encourage you to hold off eating until the anesthetic wears off. You should try to avoid any foods that require a lot of chewing for a little while after the surgery. Soups are a good bet until you are on the mend. Try to avoid that side of your mouth where the root canal was done too.

2. Stay away from the gym for a bit

One great way to avoid some hard to eat foods after all is by not building up your hunger. It’s a good idea to avoid any kind of strenuous physical activities for at least two days after having this procedure done.

We all suggest that our patients avoid any kind of sports, physical labor, hiking or even running. Not only can these activities build up a hunger you shouldn’t be satisfying right away, any strenuous physical activity can put a strain on the surgical site.

3. Take the prescribed medication

After these procedures, it’s important to keep the area clean and free from any bacteria that can cause infection. We’ll more than likely prescribe some antibiotics for you. You’ll need to take them in the correct doses over the prescribed time. It’s important to keep in mind that we may have done the root canal because of an abscess in the first place.

If that’s the case, there’s all the more reason to take your medication exactly as we prescribe it.

You’ll need to keep an eye on the surgery site for a couple days after. If you see anything unusual like excessive bleeding or suffer pain, you should contact us right away. We want to hear from you immediately if your original symptoms return or there’s a lot of swelling inside or outside of your mouth that doesn’t go away. Our Northland, NZ root canal treatment team is always on hand to answer any of your questions too.
